Kerani: Privacy Policy

Kerani: EFS Assistant, a Chrome extension by Christopher Guo. Last updated: [DATE OF PUBLICATION]

Kerani works inside your own Chrome browser on the Malaysian Judiciary's e-Filing System (efs.kehakiman.gov.my). It helps you download documents, notice new e-Review messages, keep copies of e-Review transcripts and search court cause lists, for cases your EFS account can already open. Kerani is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Malaysian Judiciary.

The short version

What Kerani handles, and where it goes

InformationWhat Kerani does with itLeaves your computer?
EFS pages you open (enclosure lists, case numbers, party names, e-Review messages)Read in your browser to list documents, name files, raise alerts and build transcripts. Identity card numbers are left out of transcripts. No
Documents and transcriptsDownloaded from EFS, or created in your browser as PDF or Word, and saved to your Downloads folder or a folder you choose. No (saved on your computer only)
Cause List Finder searches (Premium)Run in your browser, directly against EFS, using your own EFS login. Client names you type are kept only in that browser tab.Only to EFS itself, from your browser
Settings, case numbers seen, a record of which documents were saved where, download progress, messages already seen, plan statusKept in Chrome's storage for the extension, so Kerani can skip files, avoid repeat alerts and know which features are on.No
Licence key, install ID and computer label (Premium only)Sent to my licence server to check your subscription and switch Premium on. The label looks like "Kerani · Windows". The key is also shown on the payment success page and on your receipts.Yes, to my licence server only
Google account ID and email address (Premium, only if you sign in with Google)When you press "Sign in with Google" in Kerani's Settings, Google shows its own sign-in page and then confirms to Kerani which Google account you used: its permanent account ID and its email address. Kerani sends this confirmation to my licence server, which checks it with Google and records which Google accounts may use your licence key, with the date each was first and last used and a label for each computer (like "Kerani · Windows"). This is how Premium works on every computer where you sign in with the same account, without typing your key again. Kerani asks Google only for your account ID and email ("openid" and "email"); it never sees your password and gets no access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts or anything else. Signing in is optional: you can instead use your key on one computer only.Yes, to my licence server only (Google itself already knows you signed in)
Email and payment details (Premium only)Entered by you at Stripe's checkout, never in Kerani. Stripe holds your card details; I never see full card numbers. My licence server stores your email, Stripe customer and subscription IDs, your licence key, the install IDs activated with it and, if you signed in with Google, the Google account ID and email linked to it.Yes, to Stripe (card details) and my licence server (email and IDs)

Who receives data

Stripe is a payment processor. It takes your card payment at checkout. I am the seller and issue your receipts, so Stripe is not the merchant. Its privacy policy applies to what you give it at checkout: stripe.com/privacy.

My licence server is a small service I run on Cloudflare Workers. It holds the records listed above and answers whether your key is valid.

Google provides the sign-in page if you choose "Sign in with Google". You sign in on Google's own page, under Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. Kerani's use of the information it receives from Google is limited to linking your Premium to your Google account as described here.

No one else receives data from Kerani. Kerani does not use your data for advertising, sell it, or use it for creditworthiness or lending purposes. It does not use it for anything except the features described here.

Keeping EFS signed in

If you turn on "Stay logged in" (Premium), Kerani calls the same address EFS's own pages call to keep your session open, only on efs.kehakiman.gov.my and only during the hours you set. Nothing is sent anywhere else.
